The Vegetarian

Review

"I started this book on Google Books, read a preview of 30 pages. They were very interesting, got me hooked, and I bought the Kindle version. The book is short, 160 pages in length. But it packs a guttural punch on many levels. Well, three levels: First, from the viewpoint of the husband and his utter shock and subsequent disdain for his wife's choice of becoming a vegetarian and the havoc it brings to their marital life. Second, from the viewpoint of her brother-in-law, his repressed sexual desires that come to the forefront once he learns she is divorced. The story takes a turn, hinging on the back of artistic ambiguity and moral dilemma. Third, from the viewpoint of her own sister. This is the final part and more emotionally charged, perhaps because it is written through the female gaze. That gaze sears through you from the pages to your deep psyche. When the book ended, I felt ravenous—an inexplicable, primal hunger that drove me to eat a large meal. Only those who have experienced The Vegetarian will understand this peculiar reaction. This book is more than a story—it's an unsettling, multi-layered exploration of human frailty and resilience that will stay with you long after the final page. Highly Recommended."

Review

"The book focuses more on character development and social commentary. It is not a muder mystery, if someone is looking for a fast paced narrative, this book might not cut it. Having said that, the sensuous description of cuisines, raises the quality, it is really sublime. I made note of a lot of Japanese dishes mentioned there. The book has very rich culinary imagery."
